Fruit Salad ๐๐๐โ Fun Volleying Game
๐๐๐ Fruit Salad โ Fun Volleying Game
Duration: 8โ10 minutes
Ideal Age: 4โ9 years (Tots & Titans)
Focus: Volleying technique, reaction speed, footwork, and fun movement
๐พ What is a Volley?
Explain to the children:
"A volley is when we hit the ball before it bounces, right up close to the net! Itโs a short punch with the racket โ not a big swing. Just like licking a lollipop ๐ญ โ racket up in front, and push forward with your feet."
๐ Set-Up
๐งโโ๏ธ Line kids up 2m from the net (use floor spots or cones).
๐ก Place another line or row of cones 1m from the net โ this is where volleys are hit.
โ๏ธ Split the group depending on number of feeders (approx. 5:1 ratio).
For example, with 15 kids and 3 coaches/parents, make 3 groups of 5.
๐๐๐ Name the groups after fruits (Bananas, Apples, Strawberries, etc.)
๐ฎ How to Play
๐งโโ๏ธ Kids begin on the first line, facing the back fence and dancing on their toes.
๐ Coach calls a fruit: โBananas!โ โ those children turn around and march quickly to the front line.
๐ฅ Coach feeds a gentle ball for them to volley back (either forehand or backhand volley).
๐ Once the volley is done, the child returns to the first line.
๐ This continues with different fruit names being called.
๐ฅ When coach shouts โFruit Salad!โ โ all children must run to the back fence and back again
while coaches try to โtagโ them with soft balls (or throw gently at their feet like dodgeball).๐ Repeat for several rounds โ keep energy and laughter high!
โ Coaching Points
๐ญ Racket up like a lollipop in front of the face
๐ซ No backswing โ just a short punch
๐ถโโ๏ธ Use small forward steps with feet โ like walking through a puddle
๐ง Stay balanced and upright
๐ฏ Try to tap the ball with middle of the racket
๐ชถ Feathers (Younger/Beginner Tots)
โ Allow volleys to bounce once before contact
๐ฉโ๐ฆ Have parents assist child by holding hand or guiding racket
๐งธ Use balloons or foam balls for slower flight
๐ข Let them catch the ball instead of volleying if coordination is tough
๐ Slow the pace โ call fruits one by one with more time to reset
โก Progressions (Older Kids/Titans)
๐ Add backhand volleys alternating with forehands/ smashes
๐ฏ Add target areas to aim for (cones/hoops)
๐ Add a jump over a mini hurdle before stepping into the volley
โฑ๏ธ Make it timed โ how many good volleys in 60 seconds
๐ฅ Coaches can increase speed/difficulty of feeds
๐ After volleying, player switches groups and rotates through
๐ Seasonal Variations
๐ Christmas: Call out "Santa, Snowman, Reindeer" instead of fruits
๐ฃ Easter: โBunnies, Chicks, Eggsโ
๐ Halloween: โGhosts, Witches, Pumpkinsโ โ โHaunted House!โ instead of Fruit Salad
๐ Valentineโs: โHearts, Roses, Chocolatesโ โ โValentineโs Day!โ as the run cue
๐ฉโ๐ฆ Motherโs Day/Fatherโs Day: Groups named after family members โ โFamily Run!โ for group dash
๐ Wrap-Up
๐ Celebrate with big claps after each round
๐งน Kids help tidy up cones/balls
๐ฝ End with a final โFruit Saladโ dash and maybe a silly dance at the end!
