Forehands โ€“ Tennis Tots Teaching Guide ๐ŸŽพ

Time: 4โ€“8 minutes
Theme: Learning how to aim at the correct area, understand how points are constructed, and learn touch and control.

๐Ÿ“– Story Script:

โ€œDo you know how tennis players score points? Thatโ€™s right โ€” by hitting the ball into the box on the other side of the court! Today, weโ€™re going to practise doing just that. Can you aim carefully and hit your target like a real tennis pro?โ€

๐Ÿง  Purpose:

  • Learn how tennis scoring works

  • Practise aim and control (both forehand and backhand)

  • Reinforce โ€œtarget awarenessโ€ with simple visuals

  • Create a fun 1-to-1 dynamic between child and parent

The forehand is often the first shot a child learns in tennis. It's easier than the serve and forms the foundation for many other strokes. Developing strong, fun forehands at this stage builds confidence and enjoyment early on.

๐Ÿ‘€ Demonstrate!

Children learn by watching. Please demonstrate a forehand at every level โ€“ kids mirror what they see!

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Hitting Tees โ€“ Technique Focus

Hitting tees are essential for younger children. They keep the ball still and allow consistent contact at the right height.

  • ๐Ÿง’ Use for ages walking to 4 years old

  • ๐ŸŽ‚ Ages 4โ€“5 can begin live feeding (drop feeds, coach feeds, and basic rallying)

  • ๐Ÿ”„ Rotate children through stations to reduce waiting and increase reps

๐Ÿงโ€โ™‚๏ธ Key Technical Points:

  • ๐Ÿ“ Sideways-on stance

  • ๐ŸŒˆ Low to high swing path โ€“ like brushing a rainbow

  • ๐ŸŽฏ Contact in the middle of the strings

  • ๐Ÿค Shake-hands grip at bottom of racket

  • โœ‹ One or two hands โ€“ let them explore!

  • ๐ŸŸข Use spots on the floor for foot placement

๐Ÿชถ Feathers (Beginner/Younger Tots)

  • ๐ŸŽฏ Stationary balls on tees

  • ๐Ÿค One-to-one parent support

  • โœ‹ Gently guide racket hand

  • ๐ŸŽ‰ Celebrate ANY contact โ€“ big reactions build confidence!

โšก Progressions (Older/Advanced Tots)

  • ๐Ÿ”ฝ Drop feeds by coach or parent

  • ๐ŸŒ€ Try brushing for topspin with โ€œspin machinesโ€ (foam balls on string, etc.)

  • โœ‹ Encourage one-handed hitting if ready

  • ๐Ÿ”„ Add a loop in backswing for rhythm

  • ๐ŸŽฏ Focus on target hitting

  • ๐Ÿค Start cooperative rallying over mini nets

  • ๐ŸŽพ Confident parents/coaches feed to different zones

๐ŸŽค Final Coach Note

This section is free-flowing โ€“ youโ€™ll often have a wide range of ability levels. Some kids will still be on tees, others might be rallying or even volleying.
โœ… Use the parents โ€“ coach them on how to challenge their own child.
โœ… Aim to interact with every child โ€“ offer simple, specific praise or guidance.
โœ… Keep it positive and high energy!
